GED® Testing Frequently Asked Questions

Who Can Take the GED® Test?

Virginia allows people as young as 16 years old who meet qualification guidelines to take the GED test.

Do All Sections of the Test Have to be Taken at One Time?

In Virginia, you can take the individual subjects one at a time. The exam consists of four tests (reasoning through language arts, science, social studies, and math). Because of time constraints, you can take no more than two tests in a day.

Is Identification Required When You Come to Test?

Your identity must be verified by showing a valid driver's license, learner's permit, passport or other form of official government ID. The ID must show your picture and include your name, address, date of birth, ID number and signature.

What Happens If I Don't Pass the First Time? Can I Take the Test Again If I Don't Pass on the First Attempt?

The passing score is 145 for each subject. You may re-test in only those subjects you did not successfully pass.

Yes, you may take each subject test up to three times per calendar year (January to December). There is no waiting requirement between the first three test sessions. After the third attempt, test-takers must wait 60-days after their last attempt before they can test again. This will result in test-takers having up to eight opportunities to test in a year, should they require that many attempts.

How Soon After Taking the Tests will I Receive My Scores?

Test results are available via the Internet within several days after you test.

How Do I Prepare for the GED® Tests?

Adult Education classes are taught by trained instructors. Classes are free and available in the counties of Floyd, Giles, Montgomery, Pulaski and the city of Radford.

What Do I Need to Score to Earn My GED®?

You must score 145 or higher per test subject to pass and qualify for a Virginia GED certificate.

What is the Cost of the GED® Exam?

$36 per test subject. A discount or scholarship may be available for eligible students.
