ELA (English Language Acquisition) Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Who can take ELA classes?
  2. English Language Learners (ELLs) whose native language is not English, pass a screening interview, can commit to one-year of class attendance, are not currently attending nor associated with a college or university and have not been previously removed from the program.

  3. Do these classes satisfy the requirements of an F1 student visa?
  4. No, classes are non-credit and part of continuing adult education.

  5. Is there a fee or charge associated with ELA classes?
  6. At this time, there is no charge for classes. You may be asked to purchase a textbook.

  7. Is there a citizenship requirement to attend classes?
  8. You do not have to be a citizen of the United States to attend classes, but your identity must be verified with a current visa, valid driver's license, learner's permit, passport or other form of official government ID. The ID must show your picture and include your name, address, date of birth, ID number and signature. Classes are for those who currently reside in the New River Valley and surrounding area.

  9. Am I guaranteed class placement?
  10. Class placement is not guaranteed. If you pass the screening interview, you may be offered a class placement based on your screening. Classes are limited in size and run on an open-enrollment basis. Once classes are filled, you will be put on a waiting list. If you are offered a class placement, you are expected to attend the class. You may be replaced by someone on the waiting list if you do not attend on a regular basis.

  11. What classes are offered?
  12. Classes are offered at the Beginner, Low-Intermediate, High-Intermediate and Advanced levels.
