I plan to transfer to a four-year college from New River Community College. What courses should I take while at NRCC?
NRCC is a great place to begin your college education! You will find the class sizes to be smaller and the professors more accessible than in the typical freshman/sophomore class at a university. To learn more about our transfer degree programs, check out our “Transfer Resources” website.

I would like to get into the LPN or RN program at NRCC. What do I need to do?
These two programs require a separate application (in addition to the NRCC application), and are subject to competitive or selective admission. You may obtain more information on the RN or LPN admission requirements from Katie Pruett in the Admissions Office:

Do I have to complete the degree in two years or may I go at a slower pace?
We encourage students to pursue their academic goals at whatever pace will allow them to excel, while at the same time balancing their education with work and personal responsibilities. In most degree programs, you may take as little as one course a semester. However, there are some programs, such as LPN and RN, which require that students complete the degree in the time frame and semester sequence listed in the course catalog. Some “Guaranteed Admissions Transfer Agreements” to specific colleges require students to complete their transfer associate degree within two years. Other programs, such as Accounting and Information Systems, and Instrumentation may require students to complete their degree within 5 to 7 years, so that material mastered aligns with current knowledge in that field. For more specific information, students are encouraged to contact faculty in the degree program(s) of interest.

Do I need to take the courses in my degree program in the exact order listed in the course catalog?
When deciding which course(s) to take next, it is important to read the course description in the back of the college catalog to see if the course has any prerequisites. If not, then it is often acceptable to take a course out of semester sequence. Social Science electives, Health/PE, Public Speaking, and Humanities electives are examples of courses that may be taken in any semester, or in the summer. However, be aware of the degree-specific courses listed under each semester of the degree program, as these courses have been placed in this order by the faculty. Therefore, while there may not be a prerequisite for a particular course, it is often to the student’s advantage to take certain courses in the order listed. Also, some degree-specific courses are only offered in either the Fall or the Spring semester, but not both. It is always wise to consult with your faculty advisor about your academic planning.

How do I search for what classes will be offered in upcoming semesters?
