NRCC now offers a computer science degree fully online

Dec 22 2025

New River Community College now offers computer science, an associate of science degree, fully online. The 61-63 credit transfer program can now be completed in person, online, or in a hybrid format. The spring semester begins Wednesday, January 21.

The computer science degree provides the first two years of a transfer pathway for students interested in transferring to a four-year college or university and entering computer science professions. With fully transferable courses and strong advising support, NRCC gives students a head start toward completing a four-year degree. The college has transfer agreements with many four-year colleges and universities in Virginia. For a full list of transfer agreements, visit www.nr.edu/transfer.

For those interested in developing applied technical skills for entry-level IT employment are encouraged to explore NRCC’s information technology associate of applied science degree, which focuses on hands-on learning in networking, cybersecurity, systems support, and industry certifications.

“Offering the Computer Science A.S. fully online expands access for students who need flexibility while still preparing for transfer to a four-year university,” said Jonathon Surratt, NRCC assistant professor of computer science/information technology. “At NRCC, students complete their freshman- and sophomore-level computer science and general education requirements through the same rigorous, transfer-focused coursework, whether they choose a fully online, in-person, or hybrid format, with computer science courses emphasizing hands-on assignments and projects that apply programming concepts to real-world–style problems. Aligned with Virginia’s Transfer Virginia common curriculum, the program prepares students for success after transfer, supported by dedicated faculty who provide virtual meetings and advising to meet the needs of online learners.”
