Program Extension
If a student must remain in an educational program beyond the date originally estimated for completion of program on the I-20, the student must comply with USCIS procedures for program extension. STUDENT MUST APPLY FOR PROGRAM EXTENSION BEFORE END DATE ON SEVIS I-20. An F-1 student who is unable to complete the educational program within the time listed on the I-20 and is ineligible for program extension is considered out-of-status. If eligible, the student may apply for reinstatement.
Student must submit the following information to the Admissions Office:
- Statement from advisor/student explaining reason for delay and any documentation of reason
- Proof of financial support (dated within the year)
- Completion of Request for Program Extension form

If approved by NRCC, a new SEVIS I-20 will be prepared by the DSO reflecting the new completion date. The USCIS does not have to adjudicate program extensions.
