Endowed Scholarship Program
The NRCC Educational Foundation awards scholarships of up to $1,000 to support studies at New River Community College.
These awards are based on criteria such as financial need and academic achievement, and are available to persons who are enrolled or intend to enroll in specific programs.
These scholarships are made possible by the generous donations of individuals and organizations who have chosen to provide their support for students through the NRCC Educational Foundation's Endowed Scholarship Program.
Applications are available in the NRCC Financial Aid Office in Rooker Hall, P. O. Box 1127, Dublin, VA 24084. (540) 674-3615. Applications may also be obtained in the Office of Planning and Advancement and at other locations around campus.
The Financial Aid Office staff will provide information and assistance as applicants require.
The applications accepted December 1, 2009, to February 15, 2010, for scholarships in Fall 2010 and Spring 2011.

Eligibility Requirements
Except as otherwise noted, the following general criteria apply to all foundation scholarships.
. Applicant must be a citizen of Virginia living in Giles, Floyd, Pulaski or Montgomery Counties or Radford City. (Note: A limited number of scholarships do not have this requirement)
. Applicant must enroll in a program of study or declare a major at New River Community College.
. Applicant must furnish fully completed application and two letters of recommendation from non-family members. (It is preferred that one letter be from an educator or former employer.)
. Applicant must furnish copies of high school and/or college transcripts.
. Scholarship recipients must maintain a class load of 9 credit hours or more at NRCC, unless otherwise stipulated.
. Once enrolled at NRCC, scholarship recipients must maintain a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0 (a B average). (Note: A 3.0 average is not a requirement for initial consideration for a scholarship award.)

Available Endowed Scholarships with Additional Criteria
Alumni Association Scholarship (1 award)
Available to the parent, spouse, or child of an NRCC graduate. Virginia residency not required. Applicant must have demonstrated a high level of achievement in previous educational experiences. Once enrolled, student must maintain a 3.2 overall grade point average.
Bane Atkinson Blacksburg Rotary Scholarship (1 award)
Available to a resident of Montgomery County .
AT&T Scholarship (1 award)
Priority will be given to the child (natural child, adopted child or step-child) of a former employee who had at least six months of service, or who is retired on a service or disability pension at the time of application. Non-AT&T connected persons may qualify.
Stuart Beville Blacksburg Rotary Vocational Scholarship (1 award)
Available to a resident of Montgomery County who is enrolled in or intends to enroll in an occupational/technical program at NRCC.
Celanese Corporation Scholarship (1 award)
Available to the spouse or child of an active Celanese Celco Plant employee with at least one year service.
CELCO Federal Credit Union Scholarship (1 award)
Available to members of CELCO Federal Credit Union. Virginia residency not required.
Corning Incorporated Scholarship (1 award)
Available to a student who is enrolled in or intends to enroll in the electrical/electronics program at NRCC.
Deeda Scholarship (1 award)
Applicant may be from outside Virginia . Priority given to female students who are single heads of household.Once enrolled, student must maintain a 2.5 GPA.
Dublin Lions Club Scholarship (1 award)
Available to a resident of Pulaski County who is a recent high school graduate.
Eagle-Picher Automotive (Wolverine Division) Scholarship (1 award)
Available to the child (natural child, adopted child, or step-child) of a Wolverine active employee who has at least one year service with the Blacksburg plant at the time of application.
L. Brinkley Eure Memorial Scholarship (1 award)
Priority given to employees of Pulaski Community Hospital , employees of an active PCH staff physician, or spouse or child of such employees or physicians.
Thomas Jefferson Gates Memorial Scholarship (1 award)
Priority will be given to a student in the NRCC Deaf and Hard of Hearing Program. Once enrolled, the student must maintain a grade point average of 2.5 or better.
Carol Thomas Hancock Scholarship (1 award)
Available to a former student of Carol Hancock or to a student pursuing a career in elementary education.
Ann and H. W. Huff Jr. Scholarships (5 awards)
Scholarship 1: Same as listed under General Criteria.
Scholarships 2-5: Available to students enrolled in a technical program.
Huff Petroleum Co., Inc. Scholarship (1 award)
Priority will be given to a natural, step, or adopted child or grandchild of an active employee or active associated dealer who has had at least one year association at the time of application. Should there not be a qualified applicant in this category, the scholarship will be given at the discretion of the Foundation.
Alice Webb Johnson Scholarship (1 award)
Available to a student who plans to pursue a career as a science teacher.
Katz Family Scholarship (1 award)
Available to a resident of Giles County pursuing a degree in Business Management.
Charlene Doby Kilgore Memorial Scholarship (1 award)
Available to a student who is enrolled in or accepted for enrollment in the licensed practical or registered nursing program, or who intends to pursue a medical career.
Melvin G. Mabry Scholarship (1 award)
Available to a student who is enrolled in or intends to enroll in the electrical/electronics program.
James G. Manns Jr. Scholarship (1 award)
Available to a student who is enrolled in or intends to enroll in an occupational/technical program. Student must maintain a 2.5 GPA.
Samuel Adams Martin Memorial Scholarship (1 award)
Priority will be given to a resident of Giles County .
Jane O. McCarthy Memorial Scholarship (1 award)
Available to an NRCC honors student who plans to major in English.
Thomas J. McCarthy Sr. Memorial Scholarship (1 award)
Available to a student in a business program at NRCC.
Duane M. Mills Scholarship (1 award)
Available to a resident of Montgomery County . Priority will be given to a student enrolled in the Instrumentation technology program.
Joseph Moore Memorial Scholarship (1 award)
Student not required to be residents of the New River Valley .
W. E. C. Moore Scholarships (4 awards)
Students not required to be residents of the New River Valley .
Burke Mottesheard Criminal Justice Scholarship (1 award)
Available to a student pursuing a degree in criminal justice. Student must demonstrate financial need, participate in community service, and have a strong character. Student does not need to be a resident of the New River Valley . Once enrolled, student must maintain a 2.5 GPA.
National Bank of Blacksburg Scholarship (1 award)
Available to a resident of Montgomery or Giles County .
Priority will be given to the child (natural child, adopted child or step-child) of an employee who has at least three months of service at the time of application.
New River Valley Charitable Trust Scholarships (2 awards)
Available to students enrolled in a transfer curriculum.
New River Valley Emergency Squad Scholarships (2 awards)
Priority will be given to active or life volunteer members of the NRV Emergency Squad or spouse or child of such members who intend to pursue a career in a health occupation. Student must maintain class load of 6 credit hours or more with a 2.5 overall grade point average.
Hiawatha and Beverly Nicely Scholarships (2 awards)
Scholarship 1: Priority will be given to a Magnox Pulaski Incorporated employee (or employee's spouse or child).Scholarship 2: Priority will be given to a Pulaski County High School graduate.
Frederic H. and Catherine M. Pollard Scholarship (1 award)
Priority will be given to the child, spouse or grandchild of an active employee of Magnox Pulaski Incorporated.
Carol C. Powell Scholarship (1 award)
Priority will be given to a resident of Giles County .
Les and Joyce Pugh Scholarships (5 awards)
Available to residents of Floyd County .
James W. Robertson Memorial Scholarships (4 awards)
Preference will be given to barbers who reside in the New River Valley , or to children, spouses, or grandchildren of NRV barbers. Student must maintain a grade point average of at least 2.5.
Lulu Eliza Rooker Memorial Scholarship (1 award)
Priority will be given to students who are studying criminal justice or pursuing a career in a related field.
Philip Sadler Memorial Scholarship (1 award)
Available to a resident of Pulaski County who has demonstrated leadership, compassion, sincerity and kindness, which were the hallmark of Mr. Sadler's life and character.
Carilion Saint Albans Psychiatric Hospital R. N. Nursing Scholarship (1 award)
Available to a student accepted for enrollment at NRCC for the registered nursing program. Priority given to employee of Saint Albans or immediate family member (husband, wife, child).
Simmons Family Scholarships (2 awards)
Available to residents of Floyd County .
Helen Gregory Smith Scholarship (1 award)
Available to a resident of Pulaski County .
Grace Eva Mabry Tawes Scholarship (1 award)
Priority will be given to students who are studying criminal justice, nursing or desire to become a teacher.
V. E. (Jack) Vaughn Memorial Scholarship (1 award)
Priority given to a student from a farming background.
Wachovia Banks Scholarship (1 award)
Available to a first-year student living in Virginia who has graduated from high school within the past two years. Once enrolled, student must maintain a grade point average of 2.5 or better.
E. Pierce Whitman Memorial Scholarship (1 award)
Priority given to a student from a farming background.
Thomas E. Worrell Jr. Scholarship (1 award)
Available to a student who intends to pursue a career in print or electronic communications.
Everett Lee Yearout Jr. Scholarship (1 award)
Priority given to a student who is enrolled in or plans to enroll in Machine Shop Operations, Machine Technology, or Drafting and Design. Student must maintain class load of 6 credit hours or more with a 2.5 overall grade point average.

At the time of printing, a number of additional scholarships were in the process of being established. Once fully funded and available to students, they will be added to future versions of this publication. They will also be listed on the NRCC website at www.nr.edu.
